So you’re ready to take the leap with a new website for your small business — congratulations! It’s an exciting step — getting the word out about everything you offer, showcasing your skills or products and connecting with your customers and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But before you start coding or choosing color schemes, ask yourself a few questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, why do you need a new site (or think you do)? What will a new website do for you<\/em> that your existing one doesn’t? (And if you don’t have a website currently, what will a brand new one do?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Take a few minutes and jot down YOUR whys — go ahead, I’ll wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay, now that you have your own whys, let’s think about your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n (I know the word “goals” can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. I’m a BIG fan of goals. I think it’s SO important to have something specific that you’re working towards. Also, when you’re specific about your goals, it makes it easier to see if you’ve accomplished them. And accomplishing a goal not only feels good, but moves you and your business forward. SMART goals<\/a> — specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based — are the best kind of goals.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n If one of your whys for wanting a new website is to get more leads<\/em> for your business, what does that mean? How many is more? What kind of leads do you want? Phone calls? Emails? People to sign up for your email list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Take some additional time and get more specific about each why, if possible. It’s worth it, I promise!<\/p>\n\n\n\n So now you have whys and goals. Now we can start planning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Back to get more leads<\/em> — let’s say you want 10 (more) leads per month. And you’ve determined that you want those leads in the form of people signing up for your email list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Great! Now, why would someone give you their email address? Think about what has made you give your email address on other sites in the past. Was it for a valuable resource? Maybe it was because you liked the other content on the site and wanted to hear more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What can YOU offer? Think about it and write it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A good WordPress developer will be able to help you with the specifics, too. How to tie your site to your newsletter account, where to put the signup forms and how to draw attention in a non-obnoxious way to get people to actually sign up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you have clear whys, corresponding goals and a plan to achieve them, you’ll be happier with the outcome. (In any area of your life, not just with your website.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you don’t know your whys. Maybe you do, but aren’t quite sure about your goals. Maybe you have your whys and goals down, but are stuck on the specifics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it’s helpful to talk it out. All of that is fine and may apply to you and your business. But in this post, I want to ask you…<\/p>\n Think about your business. Put yourself in the shoes of your viewers and customers.<\/p>\n Think in terms of the entire site.<\/p>\n Then, think about it page by page.<\/p>\n For example, if you own a restaurant, do you need your physical address, phone number and hours of operation listed clearly on your site? (The answer is yes.)<\/p>\n Do you need photos of every dish, the entire history of your restaurant and detailed directions for getting there? Probably not. (Remember almost everyone has a GPS now, so as long as you have your address and there’s nothing weird about it, you should be good.)<\/p>\n Build it, polish it and get it out the door.<\/p>\n Here’s where you may get stuck.<\/p>\n Right after the site is built, but BEFORE it’s released (somewhere during the polishing process), you may think, “Oh wait, what about this? Let’s add this. And this. And this. And this. And don’t forget this! We have to have this.”<\/p>\n You lose sight of your plan. Maybe you think the new things are necessary because your old site had them. Maybe your competitor’s site has them. Maybe you’re afraid of publishing the new site. Maybe you just want all. the. things.<\/p>\n Going down this rabbit hole generally won’t add much\u00a0value<\/em> to your site, but it probably will push you over your deadline and your budget.<\/p>\n Don’t get stuck in the trap. Remember that a site with the most important info is better than:<\/p>\n Publishing the site at this point doesn’t mean that you’ll never change your site again. In fact, I recommend revisiting your site, your information and your goals OFTEN<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now it’s your turn! Clearly define what information your viewers and customers need, then build, polish and release it. How are you doing it? Where are they stored? How often are they taken? Is everything automatic?<\/p>\n How secure is your site? Do you have a strong username and password? Do you limit login attempts?<\/p>\n Why is this important?<\/strong> Keeping your site updated and protected and having a recent backup just in case<\/em> can save you some BIG headaches later.<\/p>\n I read an article by Carrie Dils the other day about customer service skills<\/a>. When she trained new baristas at Starbucks, she took them out from behind the counter on their first day so they could view the store through a customer’s eyes.<\/p>\n Let’s do the same with your website and look at it from a customer’s perspective.<\/p>\n Do you have the most important information about your business on your site?<\/a><\/p>\n Is your contact information out of date? Do your forms still work? What about those social feeds?<\/p>\n Is any other information out of date? Are you listing services you no longer offer? Do you offer new services that aren’t reflected on your website?<\/p>\n If you have a blog, have you written a post lately? If you’re too busy, can you refresh an old one?<\/p>\n If you have a mailing list, have you emailed them lately?<\/p>\n How does each page look? Are there any broken links or images?<\/p>\n Why is this important? <\/strong>Nothing is as frustrating to a potential customer as an outdated website. (Well, other than having no website at all.) Make sure your site has all the proper, current and correct information, and make your potential customers happy.<\/p>\n What were the goals you set for your business and your site?<\/a><\/p>\n Are you meeting them? If not, what changes do you need to make? If so, great! Maybe it’s time to set some additional goals and reach a bit higher.<\/p>\n Is there any functionality on your site that you’re not currently using? Could you clean that up?<\/p>\n Why is this important?<\/strong> You’ve spent time, money and energy on your site, make sure it’s working hard for you.<\/p>\n Now, look at your site overall. How do your images look? What about your logo and branding? Does it look dated? Are your posts well-written and targeted at your audience? Are you leveraging social media?<\/p>\n If something here is awry, maybe it’s time to hire a professional — a photographer, a graphic designer, a writer or a social media expert. As a business owner, you may already rely on professionals in other areas (i.e. you’re not your own lawyer, right?). Add these to the list and you can get back to what YOU do best.<\/p>\n Why is this important? <\/strong>A beautiful site with great photos, well-written and current information and shared on social media is magic! For example, I primarily write about websites, however it would get boring really fast if all of my images were of computers. Also, don’t spend too long searching for the perfect photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t need to download the largest possible size, especially if you’re uploading to your website.
