Creating a customized social profile page

iPhone, iPad and coffee

A few months ago I joined Instagram. If you’re there, you know that you can only put ONE link in your profile or bio. You can’t put any clickable links elsewhere, which is a huge bummer. What if you want to tell people about your most recent podcast episode or blog post? What if you’re having an upcoming event that you want to showcase? The answer is a customized social profile page.

Before we dive in, I’ll say that the most common link people add is the link to their home page. Linking to your home page isn’t bad, but there are other (better) options that we’ll discuss below.

Using a service for your social profile link

There are a TON services out there — linktree, Linkin.bio or Taplink to name a few — and there are a lot of advantages to these services. They’re quick to customize with specific information, tailored to people who are visiting your social media profile. In some cases, you can track clicks to see what people are interested in the most. Lots of services are free and they’re all super easy to use.

Create your own social profile page

A colleague of mine wrote a great post about how you can create your own Instagram page in Genesis. I love this idea because it’s the best of both worlds. You’re sending traffic to your site (vs. a third-party site like linktree) AND you’re tailoring the content more so than what is on your home page.

If you still want to track links, consider using the Campaign URL Builder to create your links. “This tool allows you to easily add campaign parameters to URLs so you can track Custom Campaigns in Google Analytics.”

Use the link everywhere

In addition to Instagram, I use my link on other social channels like Twitter and LinkedIn.

I also added the link to my business cards.

What to include on your social profile page

Regardless of how you go — with a service or a page on your own site — what should you include?

Possible options are links to:

  • Get your free gift or lead magnet
  • Sign up for your email list
  • Contact you or schedule a call
  • Learn more about your services
  • Work with you
  • Read your most recent blog post
  • Listen to your most recent podcast episode
  • Learn more about an upcoming event
  • Find you on other social media channels

Check out the above examples for inspiration as well as profile links of the people you follow on social media. I’d love to see what you come up with!
