Since 2021, I’ve been keeping track of software expenses for my business in a Google Sheet. I spend around $7K on software each year, so at the end of the year, I review and figure out what I’m actually using and what I might be able to cancel.
Last year some decisions were easy. Since I was no longer podcasting or actively pursuing SRD, I canceled Descript, Riverside, Zapier, and ConvertKit.
The decision to keep using certain software has also been easy. The thought of transitioning away from FreshBooks, Google Workspace, Loom or Zoom (I’m not a fan of Google Meet even if it IS included in Google Workspace) isn’t worth the time or potential savings.
But some decisions aren’t as easy. For example, I use Calendly to schedule calls with existing and prospective clients. I’ve paid $585.12 since 2021.
But should I switch to Zoom Scheduler for $4.99/month? What about TidyCal for $39/lifetime?
I’ve been down this road before and have tried Amelia, Book Like a Boss, Traftt and TimeSync. Most didn’t have the features I needed. Some were too hard to use. And some were just too ugly.
There’s no right answer; it’s just finding what works for me. And there’s no one path that will always work. Calendly has worked for me for years, but maybe it’s time for a change?
What I can say though, is the act of writing this down – taking all of my thoughts and spelling them out to you – has given me a bit of clarity.
Calendly renews on February 22 for $127.20 ($10.60/month) and I think I’m going to take next week and investigate TidyCal. I have heard some good things about it from people who’ve switched.
What about you? What have you been thinking about that you need some clarity on?
P.S. It’s been a LONG time, but I’m running a meetup next week! Join me virtually on Thursday, February 13 if you want to prevent spam in your contact forms. There will be a recording and notes up at wppittsburgh.com after the event if you can’t make it!
P.P.S. I also joined Bluesky! If you’re there, let’s connect.
