The roller coaster of putting yourself out there 🎢
A few weeks ago, I had a great conversation with a new connection. At one point, she mentioned that she was stuck in the middle of creating a course.
One of my goals for the new year was to create additional content around this topic (beyond the podcast/YouTube show), so I decided to do a YouTube live.
To set everything up, I:
- Requested streaming permissions from YouTube and set up the stream
- Created a landing page to advertise the event, a thank you page to deliver the info and an email reminder
- Shared the information on social media for a few weeks
- Put together a short presentation
- Tested everything out
I thought all was fine, but the closer I got to the event, the more anxious I felt.
I didn’t sleep well and had bad dreams last night. I worried that people wouldn’t come. And at the same time, I worried that people would come.
As I was eating breakfast this morning, I wondered where all this anxiety came from and why it was there.
The best I could come up with was that I felt exposed. What if everything turned out terrible and I looked like an idiot?
I can see why people want to stay in relative safety and not put themselves out there.
In a way, I’m glad I created the stream and shared it with people because then I HAD to do it.
I also logically knew that it would be good for me. It’s good to get out of my comfort zone. It’s good to try things to see what works and what doesn’t. I’m also glad it was at 11AM so I didn’t have to wait around all day being anxious.
As you can imagine, everything was totally fine. I didn’t stumble too much, nothing went horribly wrong with the tech, I can use the video on my channel and most importantly, I DID IT.
I’m proud of myself.
Here’s the video if you want to check it out. (It’s about 20 minutes.)
So, what are you afraid to do? How can you push through the fear and anxiety to get to the other side?
P.S. Season 2 of the podcast launches tomorrow 🎉 Check it out on YouTube or your favorite podcast player.
