My dad had an aloe plant in the office of his garage. He was okay but not great with plants. He’d grow a few vegetables on the side of the garage, but every rosemary plant I gave him died. The aloe, though, thrived.
The plant came to live with me two years ago. I repotted it, cleaned it out and broke it into smaller sections to give to family and friends. A big chunk stayed with me, but for two years, I’ve struggled with it. It would seem happy for a while, then turn brown or get waterlogged or just stop growing.
My dad obviously knew the proper care for this plant and I… apparently don’t. I’ve done some research and have been trying to keep it alive, but without resounding success.
I’ll keep trying because I don’t want it to die, but it got me thinking that the proper care of your website may be unclear to you.
Here are my top five tips:
- Take backups. Check with your host or install a plugin. I like weekly backups for most sites and keep three
- Keep your software updated including plugins, themes and WordPress. Twice a month or monthly is typically fine
- Stay secure. Use strong passwords, limit administrator users and consider a security plugin to scan your site for issues
- Update your content. Make sure that your contact information and offerings are current. If you have time for more, consider blogging once or twice per month
- Put your domain and hosting on autopay. It’s a huge hassle if you forget to renew one of these, so make it easy on yourself
Hopefully the tips above are helpful. If you have any tips on aloe plants, please reply and let me know!
P.S. Check out this recently completed project for Region VI Workforce Development Board in WV. Maria said, “Rene is fantastic. She really listens to the customer’s wants and needs and makes them happen. She made the experience easy for us and kept us on task.” ☺️
